It was a busy summer for StandWithUs in Israel, hosting 15 award-winning science students, 50 top international law students and a group of ecotourism journalists from respected media. All these visitors were hosted by the StandWithUs Israel Fellows who worked to identify and bring these guests to Israel. With Israel's detractors turning to legal 'lawfare' to fight Israel, the StandWithUs Fellows at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem felt it was important to run a five-day Student Conference on International Law (SCIL). Participants included various Law Student Union presidents, legal interns at the UN, EU and different NGO’s, governmental officials and PhD & M.A students. Speakers included former Israeli Supreme Court Justices, legal experts and analysts, including the respected journalist Ehud Ya'ari. A strategic tour of Jerusalem with Col. Miri Eisin, former spokesperson to the Prime Minister centered on how Israel has to balance security needs with humanitarian values. Conference attendees got to see the security fence close-up and crossed a checkpoint. The conference concluded with an emotional dinner overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem. Bidding goodbye to new life-long friends, Oliver Cooper, a non-Jewish student from the College of Law, UK, said “ I had the honor to toast the wonderful StandWithUs staff with the words, “We range ourselves without fear besides Israel. Where she goes, we go. Where she stands, we stand.” StandWithUs student Fellows at Bar Ilan University welcomed sixteen top science students from Europe to Israel, who heard from experts about utilizing nanotechnology for green solutions. They visited nanotechnology facilities and nature reserves in Israel, in a program run in conjunction with the Bar-Ilan Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials (BINA). Participants explored Israeli innovations in the field of nanotechnology via the conference entitled "Nano ISGreen". Nobel Prize winner Prof. Yisrael Aumann met with group as did Science Minister Daniel Hershkowitz. Visit www.nanoisgreen.com. Determined not to allow falling rockets and the arid environment dictate the true colors of the Southern Desert of Israel’s Negev, students from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, participating in the StandWithUs Fellowship, organized ”Eco:Negev” an ecological tour. Nine leading international tourism journalists were exposed to “green” Israeli technology which stands at the forefront of international renewable energy research and water recycling. http://www.econegev.info/. Reporters from countries including Russia, Canada, Italy, USA, France and Spain learned how the sun can be used to produce energy in the desert, build mud-huts, visit an educational solar park, and discover student initiatives for energy preservation. They lodged at Ecologicaltourist destinations and dined on environmentally friendly and organicfoods. “The current political and strategic situation have shaped the ‘face of the south’ in recent weeks. They have overshadowed a rapidly growing field in the Negev and Arava regions: Eco-tourism. This field makes sustainable tourism possible, with the purpose of preserving the toured destination, and is currently the ‘hottest’ tourism trend. However, few of the international Eco-tourists are aware of what Israel and, specifically, the Negev have to offer. This is the face of Israel we want to show,” emphasizes Tally Eyal, StandWithUs Fellow at Ben Gurion University of the Negev and the project organizer. Leading up to the event, the students dedicated much of their time to in-depth research on Eco-tourism in Israel and abroad, the creation of a carefully planned schedule, fundraising and contacting countless reporters worldwide. Between academic papers, finals, and a vibrant student life, this project came to life, driven by the determination to offer an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reveal a different Israel, through the international tourism media. “David Ben-Gurion once said that the future of Israel lies in the Negev, and few are aware that his vision is very much coming to life”, said Tally Eyal. “EcoNegev will reveal the treasures of which he spoke, and use influential figures to tell the story of the Negev to the world.” Media Articles: "Law Students take Public Diplomacy into the Legal Arena" - http://www.jpost.com/ "EcoNegev takes 7 visiting journalists on desert tour": http://www.jpost.com/Sci-Tech/ "Israel's Other Diplomatic Track: Learning About Israeli Nanotech": http://www.israelnationalnews. In its fifth year, the StandWithUs Fellowship trains 150 students from six universities to become life-long ambassadors for Israel and is endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Union of Israeli Students. Fellows learn from experts and train in public diplomacy, event planning, coalition building and media relations. The year-end project is designed to present a positive aspect of Israel to the international community. Click here to learn more about the StandWithUs Israel Fellowship |
